Tips for college students to stay health as they prepare for the start of school – WGEM

QUINCY (WGEM) – This week, college students from all over the country are going back to campus or getting ready to go back.

But with COVID-19 numbers continuing to spike, a lot of parents are worried about their kids safety.

College isn’t a place where it’s easy to socially distance.

There are packed dining halls, small living arrangements in dorms with a roommate, and students don’t have a lot of personal space.

Officials with Quincy Medical group said one of the biggest concerns for students will be being able to be socially distanced.

“Obviously a lot of kids are going to be in small spaces. That is a concern. The closer you are to people, the more likely you are to spread disease. So, they have to be very careful. They have to have good hand hygiene, cough in your elbow, wash your hands frequently and obviously if you’re sick, stay away from other people,” said Dr. Adam Reyburn, Quincy Medical Group.

Just like any school, students on college campuses get sick during a normal semester. There’s a lot of worry that we could continue to see that trend this year, but it could be made a lot worse by COVID-19.

Dr. Reyburn said common bad habits of college students like excessive drinking and not getting enough sleep can negatively affect their health and make it easier for them to get sick.

“Get good rest. I think there is some benefit to vitamin C and zinc, especially with COVID-19. And having a well-balanced diet. When you go to college people have a tendency to drink alcohol. I think you need to be cautious with that,” Reyburn said.

Reyburn also stressed the importance of wearing masks and socially distance in any communal areas.

He said following guidelines on campus will help students have a safe school year.
