South Korea reports more than 800 new coronavirus cases | TheHill – The Hill

South Korea reported 813 new cases of the coronavirus on Saturday, bringing the total number of cases in the East Asian country to more than 3,100.

Outside of mainland China – where the outbreak started – South Korea has the most reported cases of the virus.

The spike in new cases comes as the South Korean officials have been testing thousands of people, mostly in the southeastern city of Daegu and nearby towns, where 86 percent of all coronavirus cases in the country have come from, The New York Times reports.

“In case the infectious disease spreading beyond control finds its way into our country, it will entail serious consequences,” Kim said, according to the Times.

The reclusive nation already closed its border with China and Russia and also canceled all flights and trains to China as well.

On Thursday, the U.S. and South Korea postponed annual joint military exercises due to the spread of the coronavirus in South Korea.

One U.S. service member and his wife have both tested positive for the virus, while 22 South Korean soldiers had come down with the virus as of Thursday.

The U.S. has over 28,000 troops in South Korea currently.
