Some health tips for how Montrealers can protest safely on Sunday – Montreal Gazette

Masks, signs and noisemakers — there are ways to protest safely during a pandemic, public health officials say.

On Sunday, Montrealers will take part in a protest against police brutality toward the black community. It follows one that took place last weekend.

Organizers of Sunday’s march — which will begin at 11 a.m. at Place Émilie-Gamelin in downtown Montreal — are telling people to wear masks.

In the wake of last weekend’s Black Lives Matter anti-racism protests over the death of George Floyd while in police custody in Minneapolis, health authorities offered some other suggestions.

“Gathering together is a very powerful way to lend that support and to be an ally,” Health Minister Patty Hajdu said on Monday. “There are ways to do it more safely.”

She said hand sanitizer and masks are musts because physical distancing may not be possible.

“Although we’ve seen much more peaceful protests in general here in Canada, we still encourage people to be very careful when they’re congregating in large crowds,” Hajdu added.
