Clean Eatz, at 2222 Medical Center Parkway, is Murfreesboro’s newest health food store, serving up made-to-order menu items in a café along with other fresh and frozen items available.

“We’re a meal prep company with a healthy café,” explained franchise owner Will Russ, who first opened in Nashville nearly three years ago and has been in Murfreesboro about a month inside the former Zoe’s Kitchen.

He once tipped the scales at 365 pounds before getting on a Clean Eatz meal prep. He was able to shed more than 150 of those pounds and began bodybuilding.

“My weight was out of control. I had a terrible relationship with food and I was really looking for some help and a change. This ended up working for me,” Russ said.

Most meals are under 500 calories and prep meals are $7.60 or less, Russ said.

To explain meal prep, these are proportioned meals made ahead of time. Meal prep became popular in the fitness industry when athletes were needing fast and fresh healthy options and only had a few suitable fast-food options to choose from.

Most often you’ll find these healthier meal preps include things like brown rice, beans, whole vegetables and a protein like beef and chicken.

Based in North Carolina, Clean Eatz takes meal prep to the next level. Items include 30 to 50 menu options such as cauliflower crust pizza, baked crispy chicken, lemon herb chicken, Russ said.

“A lot of things are just a healthier, cleaner version of what people want to eat,” Russ said. “And we’ve got flat-rate pricing on all our meals and proteins.”

The more meals you buy, prices go down for each one. Meal plans range from $38 for five up to $128 for 21 meals. Sundays and Mondays are most popular, as people look to kick off the week with a healthy eating plan.

New menus are posted each Thursday online at cleaneatz.com/mealplanmenu. Then you pick up your order the following week. You can also drop in anytime and purchase what’s available in the cooler.

In addition to the meal prep items, Clean Eatz sells protein powders, snacks, sauces and spices.

Those looking for a healthy lunch or dinner but don’t want a meal plan can dine in the café, or order to-go from the menu.

Clean Eatz Cafe

That’s where I started at Clean Eatz — lunch on the patio at the Clean Eatz café with Murfreesboro City TV multimedia journalist Michael Linn White.

We started off with the buffalo cauliflower bites. These breaded cauliflower heads were tossed in buffalo sauce and I can tell you, I didn’t miss the meat at all. Plus, it was only 266 calories — only 133 each since we split it.

For the main dish, my lunch buddy chose the chicken pesto wrap: white meat chicken in a garlic-herb wrap filled with spinach, tomatoes, cucumbers, turkey bacon and kale pesto sauce. It was a hit and filling.

I created my own bowl, which come in small, medium and large sizes. You get to choose a base like brown rice, quinoa kale blend, sweet potato chunks or protein noodles. Add up to 3 veggies from the dozen-plus offered along with a protein. Bison, which is growing in popularity, is an option along with salmon, chicken, shrimp, shredded beef, and a black bean burger. Top the whole thing off with a sauce and a spice.

I got the small chicken on a bed of soft sweet potato chunks, paired with red onions, tomatoes and fire-roasted corn and black beans, topped with fiesta fit spice, and sweet chili and cilantro lime dipping sauces.

It was wonderful and I ate every bite. Everything in the bowl worked together to make the meal. The chicken is bland, not sauced up or marinated, which would add extra calories, but the flavor really comes with the powdered spice and dipping sauces (or dressings, if you will). The sweet potato chunks rounded out the overall blend.

Next time, I might order a larger size. And even though you’re only supposed to get three veggies, I’d opt for more, even if it’s extra.

We also ordered the Malibu mango smoothie.

Clean Eatz smoothies are made with the protein powder and may not be appealing to those used to smoothies made with fresh greens and frozen whole fruitThe menu includes 10 smoothies, from fruit-flavored to chocolate ones.

Overall, we were both impressed with the menu variety, the meal prep and our food. If you’re thinking healthy means flavorless and meatless, that’s not what Clean Eatz is. Yes, there are vegetarian and vegan options, but there’s also plenty of meat.

I appreciate the price point, too. For less than $10 and an average of 500 calories, you can find a flavorful meal that is also healthy.

Hours at Clean Eatz are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Call 615-203-5096 for details.
