3 Tips for Healthy Aging – Newton Daily News

4 min read

Autumn is a great time to self-evaluate, and to consider whether you’re on track to meet your goals.   For those over age 50, it’s important to have a plan for healthy aging, and to be aware of the positive aspects of growing older.   Good physical and mental wellness, along with a lively social life, combine to ensure you are aging in a healthy way.   Here are 3 tips to help you stay on track:

1.   Make an investment in your health.   “It’s important to take the time to focus on your physical and mental health,” said Leanne Schwickerath, Assisted Living Director of Nursing for Newton Village.   “It’s easy to forget some of these check-ups, so make a list, make appointments, and get it all on your calendar.   You should have your general health, hearing, and eyesight checked annually, and visit your dentist. Invest in foot care, behavioral therapy, and other important check-ups that will help you feel good.   It’s also crucial to get your annual vaccinations, including flu, pneumonia, and shingles immunizations.”

2.   Make sure you’re eating nutritious foods and getting plenty of rest.   “I advise eating a protein-rich, high fiber diet,” added Schwickerath.   “This is especially important for older adults, who may not be eating enough protein.   Protein is necessary for healing and repairing the body.   Proper rest is also important.   Many older adults don’t get enough sleep due to frequent nocturnal urination; ask your doctor for helpful options.”

3.   Be physically active, creative, and social.   “Even during the pandemic, people should cultivate their interests,” said Schwickerath.   “Start a new hobby, and begin an exercise routine.   Even just walking around the block is great for your heart and lungs.   Stay in touch with friends, even if just virtually.”

Taking a positive, proactive approach to aging will help ensure the enjoyment of a healthy lifestyle for many years to come.   For more information, please contact:
